This is an original 1918 letter from the Fox Film Corporation film exchange in Minneapolis, Minnesota featuring advertising for Theda Bara in the silent film Salome. Film exchanges, such as the Fox Film Corporation’s Minneapolis exchange, handled distribution of movies beginning in the silent era when larger movie studios were vertically integrated and controlled both production and distribution in what became known as the so-called Studio System.

This letter is a single sheet dated September 5th, 1918 from R.K. Evans, Branch Manager, to a theater operator in Wisconsin concerning film bookings for the month of September 1918. This letterhead is nicely illustrated at the bottom with images of Theda Bara and text that reads William Fox Presents THEDA BARA in a Theda Bara Super-Production SALOME.

Theda Bara was one of Hollywood’s first sex symbols whose femme fatale roles earned her the nickname The Vamp. For a period of time Bara was Fox Studio’s biggest star. She made about 40 films most of which are lost today as the result of a fire at Fox’s film storage facility in New Jersey in 1937. Unfortunately, other than a few small fragments this film Salome is also considered among the lost films. This letter dated September 5th, 1918 was sent out about a month before Salome opened on October 6th of that year.

This illustrated letterhead is a vintage original sent out from Fox Film Corporation’s Minneapolis exchange office in 1918. This is the neatly folded letterhead only without envelope. Overall condition is very good with just light handling wear and modest toning from age. Overall condition is very good.
