This vintage original and rare interwar period US Navy recruiting poster was issued in 1934 and features artwork created by J.W. Burbank under the title YOUNG SALTS. This is a companion poster to another poster created by Burbank around this time period titled OLD SALTS.
The artwork for the Old Salts poster was based on a famous photograph taken aboard the US Navy steam sloop-of-war USS Mohican in 1888 by Assistant Surgeon Hervey W. Whitaker titled “The Old Navy” or “The Old Salts of the Square Rigger Navy”. Text on this Young Salts poster mentions that in the modern American navy of 1934 steel ships had replaced wooden and steam had replaced sail emphasizing modernization of the US Navy. The lower margin is printed 8-1-34 so thus a 1934 publication date. Text on the poster reads:
“YOUNG SALTS” Steel ships replace the wooden ones, steam has vanquished sail but the young men of Our Navy today carry on in the same spirit of zeal and faithfulness as the Old Salts of early days. WILL YOU CARRY ON?
This vintage original poster shows moderate handling wear and some bumping and creasing in the margin along the edges as well as some light creasing in places. There is a short tear of about a half inch without loss of paper on both the top and bottom edges. Overall condition is very good for this rare poster.
